Consortium member of Embalagem do Futuro® wins National Innovation Award 2026
PetriTag®, a paper-based smart label developed by AlmaScience as part of the Embalagem do Futuro® Mobilizing Agenda, has been honored with the National Innovation Award (PNI) 2026, in the “Agriculture, Food and Beverages” category.
This distinction recognizes the pioneering nature of the solution, as well as the contribution of AlmaScience and the partners of PPS11 – Smart Sustainable Fish Transport System, led by ZØR Thermal, toward the development of more innovative and sustainable packaging solutions in Portugal.
PetriTag® is a colorimetric label, with no electronics or batteries, that addresses the global challenge of food waste, a problem affecting roughly a third of all food produced for human consumption. The solution continuously monitors bacterial contamination in fresh food, directly within the packaging itself. Integrated into the packaging, it enables ongoing monitoring of bacterial contamination in fresh food.
Through a simple color change, similar to a traffic-light system, it allows anyone in the value chain, from production to the end consumer, to quickly and reliably check the safety of the food.
