Embalagem do Futuro® attends the LCA FOOD 2024 Conference

Between September 8 and 12, PIEP took part in the LCA FOOD 2024 Conference, where it presented the results achieved in the development of the Packaging of the Future project | PPS03 – REDUCE – REDesigned sUstainable ContainErs and pallets.

The main purpose of Project PPS03 – REDUCE – REDesigned sUstainable ContainErs and pallets is to reuse or recycle industrial waste in an integrated circular process for pallets and boxes. The results presented reflect the knowledge already achieved in its development.

The main goal of the work was to evaluate and compare the environmental impacts of two types of transport boxes, that is, stackable boxes versus foldable/collapsible boxes. The declared unit (DU) was defined as the production and distribution of a transport box, following the gate to gate concept. In the end, it was possible to demonstrate that folding/collapsible boxes have better environmental performance than stackable boxes. In addition, within each impact category it was also possible to determine that it is the injection and thermoforming stages that contribute most to environmental impacts. In contrast, the assembly and distribution stages contribute the least to environmental impacts. The results of this study will help with decision-making in the context of the project.
